Toto, We're Not Stuck in a Doug Fir Forest Anymore

Day 140 - August 23
Mile: 2226.5 to 2251.2 (24.7)
up/down: 3600/2800 feet

New trip birds: American Three-toed Woodpecker and Varied Thrush.

Volcanos. Everywhere we looked today we saw volcanos. We climbed the side of Mt Adams, saw St Helens to the west, and Ranier to the north. We'll see that one up close and personal next. There was pure joy etched on our faces after days of forest strolling. And water! There was water everywhere today so no carries. The hiking was good with a reasonable amount of up and down. What more could we have asked for?

Mt St Helens

Mt Ranier

Mt Adams

We are finished now with Mt Adams and on our way to the famed Goat Rocks. Not sure what exactly to expect but have heard they are spectacular. We will know tomorrow and the next day.

We finally nailed down a three-toed woodpecker this morning in a mixed hemlock and fir forest. And right as we pulled in to camp at dusk I had two Varied Thrush fly across the trail and perch up for me. We are glad to finally get those nailed down.
