You can't go anywhere without "stuff," and the Pacific Crest Trail is no exception. But have too much stuff, especially heavy stuff, and you turn into a plodding wreck (or worse) on a long trail. We've done the "everything but the kitchen sink" style backpacking of the old days, but with age comes wisdom and with technology comes new ways of thinking when it comes to backpacking gear. Modern gear is light, amazingly so - especially with the addition of packing only what you really
need. Keeping the base weight (before adding consumables) of the pack as low as possible, but still having enough gear to keep you safe and warm, will continue to be our method for all our trips. For the PCT, we will aim for a base weight of under 12 pounds. Here are some of the things we are carrying:
