Fire and Ice

Day 139 - August 22
Mile: 2202.7 to 2226.5 (23.8)
up/down: 3000/3800 feet

Two days ago we were cooking in near 100F heat. This morning it was 38F with a 20 mph wind out of the north that felt like it was off the North Pole. We wore a lot of clothes out of camp and kept them all on until lunch.

This is the fourth day of forest walking with few views. I know we are within spitting distance of the beautiful Mt. Adams if we could just see it. We did see a monster old growth Doug Fir.

The weight of my pack feels normal again having whittled it down from 8 to 4 days of food. And thankfully a trail maintenance crew has been through this section removing what would have been hundreds of blow down trees we would have had to crawl over and around.

My shoes, which were really ready to be replaced in Cascade Locks are barely holding on.  Tonight when we got to camp I sewed up a hole with dental floss and shoe goo'd several others. I've had these shoes since Shasta at mile 1500 and beat them through some very abrasive volcanic soil and rocks. They've done all I could expect. 3 more days, 3 more days...

Lordy, your shoes are something else. Glad you have a photo to remind you in the future.
