Walking the Big Bear Rim

Day 14 - April 19
Mile: 259 to 279
up/down: 2500/2000 feet

Our wonderful host for yesterday Sandy dropped us back at the point we left off bright and early. The temperature was 28F so we were glad to be indoors last night!  The route for the day would take us counter clockwise around the Big Bear basin starting at the far east end. Before the day was out we would be most of the length of Big Bear Lake to the west. The hike started in a dry pinyon pine forest with the expected Black-chinned Sparrows, Pinyon Jays, and Bewick's Wrens keeping us company. We did have a few other good birds mixed in including a Gray Flycatcher on singing on territory, a Greater Roadrunner sunning on a rock, and a migrant Hermit Warbler foraging in a pinyon. After an early lunch we climbed a thousand feet elevation to a beautiful forest of Jeffery Pine and mountain juniper along the northern flank of Gold Mountain. We would stay in and enjoy this lovely forest for the rest of the day. Birds of note in this section includes Plumbeous Vireo and a Black-throated Gray Warbler both singing on territory. The track was pretty easy walking today and seemed easier than the statistics indicate. Views down toward the desert to the north and Big Bear to the south livened up the view all day.

For the hard core birders in the audience I am appending an eBird summary thus far. For the rest of you, just roll your eyes and ignore. :-)

  2. Well, being not of the birding sect--though I could come around--my first thought is 28F is cold. But what a treat you're able to choose...and see stuff we only dream of. Great shots of course. While I bang away to send $$ to Drexel (Caden leaves in Sept), the two of you cross the earth. Enjoy every minute!!

  3. Great list, still impressed by your vireo list. I can't wait to see what a good fallout does to the list! Gorgeous trees too.

  4. Great bird sightings. When you see a good bird mark the GPS location on your ebird list as you walk Holcomb area.
