Alabama Arches

Sad, but true.  We have lived in the Eastern Sierra for over 30 years and have not ever, even once, been to the Alabama Hills.  That is until today.  And it was fabulous.  I have always avoided it due to the stigma of it being called the Hollywood Western film location capital of southern California.  And as it turned out, they were filming something there today.  The 200 cars and numerous semis and trailers were a bit over the top, but we wandered out into the rocks and left all that behind.

What inspired this change or heart?  Well, we needed a short hike and I had seen a couple of pictures of Mobius Arch framing the Sierra.  And it just looked beautiful, so I suggested it as a hike.

We wandered for a couple hours and managed to find 6 arches.  We even had one we called the Hidden Arch, we saw it from afar, but needed a good ten minutes of wandering around to see it up close.  It was only visible up close from one angle.  When we returned home and did a bit of searching we discovered there are at least 76 arches in the area.  We will be going back and seeing if we can track down some of the remaining 70.  If you want to join us, let us know.
