Catching Kitty

This is an update our our Bobcat kitten experience from yesterday. By afternoon we had been contacted by Cindy Kamler, the manager of Wildcare Eastern Sierra, and made plans to meet with Jim and Dawn, two of the volunteers at the facility. The kitten was in a remote area and we guided them to the spot. They brought a wildlife camera which we set up near the den where we last saw the kitten. There was no activity in the area while we were there and we hoped that meant that mom bobcat had returned during the day and took care of the kitten.

This morning we met up again to retrieve the camera. As we walked up to the area we immediately heard the kitten, squealing near the same spot we found it yesterday. Not good. The camera was retrieved and reviewed, with no images of any activity near the den. A decision was made to catch the kitten and take it to rehab. She was very skinny and showed very little fear of us, at least until we tried to catch her. She hid under a bush and getting her out was a little tricky. With all of us surrounding the bush, Dawn covered her with a blanket and grabbed the back of her neck. A quick maneuver and we had her in a soft cooler for the 30 minute drive to the rehab center.

By now she is safe and being fed and hydrated at the rehab center. The plan is to eventually release her back to the wild. We will continue to check up on her and report back later.

  2. You guys are awesome. I am so glad you persisted and found the kitten. Appropriate that the person involved in rescuing a bobcat kitten would be named Bob! Congratulations on a job well done.
