Based on a recommendation from our friend, Collette, we
decided to head up to the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest. Our original plan was to walk in and see the trees, but Ron and Nancy
were heading up to try and find their Inyo County sage-grouse, so we decided to
help them in the morning and see the trees in the afternoon.
Our sage-grouse expedition was lovely, but did not turn up
any grouse. Unfortunately, this is
fairly typical. We did though see
several piles of sage-grouse poop, so they do occasionally use the area.
We then headed over to the Schulman Grove picnic area to
have lunch and we formed a plan to climb one of the small nearby mountains. It was a great choice. In addition to the bristlecones on the way
up, we had amazing views from the top -- the Sierra from Whitney to peaks near
Sonora, White Mountain, Eureka Sand Dunes, Maturango Peak, Telescope Peak, the
Grapevine Mountains, and even mountains in Nevada. Combine this with a calm sunny 70 degree day
and life doesn’t get any better than this.
