Matthes Lake - Yosemite

Cathedral Lake
We needed one more hike in Yosemite before the snow flies and we leave on another international birding adventure. And of course we had to drag Hikin' Bill along. Susan picked a destination we haven't been to in five years, and after returning we can safely say that it won't be as long before we go again. Matthes Lake is perched in a lovely little basin just east of the Matthes Crest, a long fin of wickedly steep and majestic granite south of Tuolumne Meadows. The easiest approach to Matthes Lake for a day hike is south on the John Muir Trail from Cathedral trailhead to Cathedral Pass, then cross-country down canyon to Echo Lake before a short ascent in an obvious notch to the basin. It's easy hiking and gives amazing views along the way of Cathedral Peak and Lakes, Echo Peaks, Tresidder Peak, and the imposing Matthes Crest. The lake itself isn't much, but the crest is awe inspiring making for a worthy day hike destination.
