Valley of Fire -- Fire Wave and Beyond

Our next stop on our desert mini vacation was the Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada.  We had spent a day there in 1991 and did the Valley of Fire Overlook Trail.  This time we went a bit further afield.  An early start gave us the Fire Wave Trail all to ourselves.  It is billed as being just as cool as The Wave in Arizona.  It isn't, but it was beautiful.  Even more impressive, to me, was the palette of colors in in the distance.  It included mauve.  Yes, I would be walking through purple rocks.  Oh my.   From the Fire Wave we did the White Domes Slot and then headed up to the petroglyphs in the northern part of the park.  We went along the road, big mistake, it was boring.  On the way back we did an off trail meander through the red rocks which was lovely.  We finished the hike by completing the White Domes trail and an unnamed connector to get us back to our car.

There's mauve in them there hills.

Bob is getting just the right photo of the fire wave.

Love all those colors.

A fun mini slot canyon.

Duck Rock

Another slot.

The slot gets even narrower.

Hey look, there is some mauve again.

A desert bighorn sheep.

After our lovely walk, we visited the other petroglyph sites in the park.

And the elephant trunk formation.

I really like feet petroglyphs.

Atlatl Rock

  1. Some really different petroglyphs. Great to see. Rust and sunlight along with wavy lines make beautiful photos. Such a treat to see. Bob had fun with his various windows. And another Desert Bighorn. Nice. Thank you.
