Death Valley - Golden Canyon and Gower Gulch

Bob and I did a little desert vacation with our first stop being in Death Valley. We hiked the Golden Canyon - Gower Gulch Loop.  This is a lovely hike that I had been on 15 years ago and that Bob had never done.  It also has the landmark Manly Beacon, which goes with our overall theme for this winter.  Yes, Manly and Death Valley.

While the mud and rock formations are beautiful, they don't provide much in the way of bird habitat.  We did not see or hear a bird on our hike.  Sad, but true.  I guess that gave us more time to enjoy the views.

Our first view of Manly Beacon

Red Cliffs

Acres and acres of mud.  Oh boy.  My favorite.

Red Cliffs up close.

Did I mention I like mud formations, especially when they have stripes.

We walked down Golden Canyon, and then along the base of the Black Mountains for about half a mile.  The cliffs along this section are mud capped with a darker volcanic stone.

Next was heading up in Gower Gulch.  The lower part of the canyon is rocky, and is very different looking than Golden Canyon.  The number of people who visit this canyon is also much lower and we only saw a few folks on our walk up.

Entering the mouth of Gower Gulch.

The upper part of Gower is volcanic capped mud formations.
